A .gov website belongs to an official government organization in the United States. The IRS allows electronic filing (e-filing) through tax software or authorized providers, which is faster and reduces errors. If you prefer, you can still print and mail a paper copy to the IRS, but it may take longer to process. Show any negative numbers (losses or decreases) in column A, B, or C in parentheses. Generally, married people can’t file as head of household. Unless otherwise stated, you must still complete all appropriate lines on Form 1040-X, as discussed under Line Instructions, later.

Also attach any additional or corrected Forms 1099-R, Distributions From Pensions, Annuities, Retirement or Profit-Sharing Plans, IRAs, Insurance Contracts, etc., that show federal income tax withheld. You originally reported $21,000 as your adjusted gross income on your 2022 Form 1040.

After selecting one of the IRS File offers, you will leave IRS.gov website. The top of Form 1040 requires basic personal information, including your name, Social Security number, and address. If you are filing jointly with a spouse, their details will also be required. The form asks for your filing status (e.g., single, married filing jointly, head of household) and whether someone can claim you as a dependent. Unfortunately, you will need to file a paper return for prior years. Don’t attach any extra information or documents to the return to prove your eligibility to claim a dependent.
